Early Saturday morning, the US Senate gave president Donald Trump his first big legislative win of 2017, passing the new GOP tax bill with a 51-49 vote.
The legislation was opposed by every Democrat in the Senate, along with Tennessee Senator Bob Corker. But that wasn’t enough to defeat the bill, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was able to sway Republican holdouts like Jeff Flake and Susan Collings to join their Republican counterparts just hours before the final vote was cast.
A similar bill recently made it’s way through the House of Representatives, which means that the next step will be to reconcile the two bills before a final vote. Some senators are still concerned by the Joint Committee on Taxation’s recent assessment that the legislation could add at least $1 trillion dollars to the national deficit, a point that will need to be addressed as lawmakers reconcile the two bills.
