Mary Stewart was born in December, 1917. She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1934. As a reporter for the Cleveland News, Mary was the first woman ever to cover a Major League Baseball game in 1948.

This Maple City icon turns 100 on December 21, and her birthday is being celebrated throughout the month of December with various local events. We caught up with Mrs. Stewart today at one of those events, held in the Lanning-Young Research Center by the Firelands Historical Society, where she told us that the secret to a life well lived is “waking up each day and treating it as if it were the ONLY day”.

Mary has been an inspiration to generations. Earlier this year, she served as guest pianist for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church here in Norwalk. We were fortunate enough to capture portions of her performance,  and we’re thrilled to share some of the footage with you here. This woman is a gem. And the City of Norwalk is lucky to call her one of our own. Enjoy…
